Municipal/Stormwater Management
Over the past 24 years, SAI staff have observed and participated in the tremendous growth and development that has occurred throughout the State of Florida. During this time, we have intentionally maintained a narrow focus, electing to concentrate almost entirely on the most challenging stormwater management projects for the public sector.  These have quite often involved multiple governmental jurisdictions and various stakeholders, sometimes with competing interests. Although our focus has remained concentrated, the range of project experience within the stormwater management field of engineering is both comprehensive and exhaustive.

SAI’s staff has modeled watersheds ranging in size from a few square miles to more than 90 square miles. Almost every imaginable terrain and hydrologic characteristic has been modeled including:
  • Highly urbanized systems such as the Little Econlockhatchee River Basin in Orange and Seminole Counties.

  • Rural areas such as the Reedy Creek Basin in Orange County and the Upper Myakka River Basin in Sarasota County.

  • Coastal areas such as the Inglis-Yankeetown basins in Levy County, and Delaney Creek and Archie Creek and Buck Creek Basins in Hillsborough County.

  • Pine flatwood areas such as Bithlo area in Orange County.

  • Higher relief areas such as various watersheds studied in the City of Tallahassee.

The smallest of our stormwater models consisted of approximately 100 basins and nodes and the largest model was well over 2,000. The level of detail of a model depends on the objective of the specific project. Each of the modeling efforts included compiling substantial amounts of data to assess existing flooding conditions. Additionally, design alternatives to alleviate flooding problems were typically evaluated for most of the modeling efforts. Numerous projects have also involved water quality/pollutant loading analyses and the design and implementation of BMPs to improve receiving water quality.

GIS is an integral part of almost every stormwater management project at SAI. Employing GIS tools on a wide variety of projects, SAI has cost effectively modeled and analyzed numerous watersheds and designed stormwater improvements.
